Every ant trail leads back to a nest, and treating that nest is the most direct way to reduce the colony. Some colonies have more than one nest, linked by trails through the garden. Sandy soil near the beach makes it especially easy for ants to dig in.

Some nests are tucked deep under slabs or inside walls and cannot be reached directly, which is where baits do the work. Keep children and pets off treated garden beds and lawns until the crew says they have dried. You may see ants moving around for a few days as the colony reacts, and that is normal. Keeping mulch pulled back from the walls and filling gaps in paving makes it harder for new nests to form close to the house.
