Sugar ants are the larger ants people often see wandering across the kitchen or up the walls in the evening. On the Sunshine Coast, the banded sugar ant is common, with an orange-brown body and a darker head and tail. They nest in soil, under logs and rocks, around tree roots and sometimes in wall cavities or old timber. They come out mostly at dusk and overnight, looking for sweet food and water.
Because they forage at night, many people only notice sugar ants when they turn on the kitchen light and see them on the bench. Keep benches wiped, store sweet food and drinks in sealed containers and do not leave fruit bowls out overnight during a bad patch. Pet food left out overnight is another thing they find quickly. Trimming branches and plants back from the walls and roof helps cut off their paths into the house.
